Knitting makes us calmer and happier. Studies have shown that knitting can help with managing stress, depression or anxiety, while also improving our cognitive function. Because it keeps our hands busy, knitting can also help us beat compulsive habits, including doom scrolling.
It makes sense that out of all crafts knitting has these wonderful benefits. Knitting is routine, rhythm, repetition, control. When we hold the needles in our hands, we are in control of the yarn, in control of what we do. The repetition of the stitches gets us into a calm routine and flow.
In addition to its benefits to our mental and physical health, knitting translates into tangible things, whether wearable or decorative, giving us a sense of achievement, increasing our self-esteem, confidence, and sense of purpose.
